| Once you've completed your project, don't send your leftover clay bricks, pavers and roof tiles to landfill. Help save the environment and recycle!
Midland Brick have developed an innovative, multi-award winning recycling program where old, broken and unwanted clay bricks, pavers and roof tiles are crushed back to their original state and reused in the manufacture of new internal brick products. By recycling this waste, Midland Brick minimises mining and diverts waste materials from landfill - benefits unequalled by any other building material. The strength, quality and technical specifications of new internal brick products that contain recycled waste are not affected in any way. Since the recycling program began in July 2006, over 41,000 tonnes of waste has been recycled. This is equivalent to over 14.6 million bricks, or enough to build over 666 average double brick homes. It is imperative that the waste material is 'clean' - that is, the clay brick, paver and tile waste cannot have any contaminant materials mixed in with it, especially cement, timber, paper, plastic, metal, or excessive mortar. Contaminated waste material will not be accepted under any circumstances. Pictured below are acceptable loads of recycled waste and unacceptable loads of contaminated waste.
Midland Brick's innovative and sustainable recycling program has won many awards, including the:
"Sustainability is a real focus for us, we are delighted to provide the industry with a service to take clean building waste off site that otherwise would have gone to landfill, costing expense to industry, home builders and consumers," Mr Smith said. The program operates from four major streams of recycling:
|
| General Public |
Midland Brick encourages the general public to return waste clay bricks, pavers and roof tiles to one of Midland Brick's five Recycling Yards: Customers are welcome to bring back small quantities of clean waste to any of these Recycling Yards, from a few loose unwanted off-cuts, leftovers or broken bricks up to garden trailer loads. Customers should call 13 15 40 prior to returning waste to ensure that there is sufficient bin capacity at their preferred Recycling Yard. Green plastic strapping from brick and pavers packs can also be recycled at each of the above Recycling Yards. Alternatively, in what is a WA first, Midland Brick offers a kerbside collection service to the general public for loads of clean recyclable waste over 750kg - the equivalent of one trailer load. This service is available by request only from a low $50 per trailer load fee, and collects from Jindalee in the north, to Baldivis in the south, and as far as Sawyers Valley in the east. The recycling of clean clay bricks, pavers and roof tiles from demolished houses through this collection service allows large volumes in a single site to be recycled, and significantly lowers builders and renovators disposal costs. Another area that has proved very successful in this venture has been the recycling of whole clay paved driveways. Recycled waste must be free from contaminants and must be left on the verge on pallets or sandy blocks for easy access and pick-up. Midland Brick will not collect loose waste or send machinery or vehicles onto private property under any circumstances. Please note Midland Brick requires payment in full by cash or credit card prior to pickup. Payment on site is not accepted. Collections usually take 1 to 10 working days. Customers should call (08) 9267 9826 for more information or to book a kerbside collection. |
| Commercial Building Sites |
Pindan Construction became Midland Brick's first partner organisation for the recycling program in 2005. Pindan is a commercial builder who shares Midland Brick's environmental vision and enthusiasm. Pindan recognised the financial and environmental benefits of reducing landfill waste, and the added benefit of cleaner and safer building sites. Waste bins are placed inside supervised commercial construction sites and are collected by Midland Brick trucks when the next brick delivery is made. |
| Recycled Demolition Waste |
An important aspect of the recycling program has been inviting specialist waste recycling companies to partner with Midland Brick. One of the most enthusiastic of those to join was Ray Gullotto of Capital Recycling, whose company sorts demolition material before returning recycled brick waste to the Middle Swan brickworks site. Capital Recycling has shown its strong commitment to the program by investing significant funds in new machinery and equipment in order to sort the waste material. Xearth is another demolition waste recycling company who has recently come on board. Please note Midland Brick does not accept waste direct from demolition companies under any circumstances. |
| Residential Building Sites |
To enable collection of waste from residential building sites Midland Brick set up a service known as the 'Midland Magpies', after magpies habit of collecting pieces of rubbish and taking it back to their nests. Residential builders notify Midland Brick when bricklayers are finished, and the Midland Magpies Brick Recycling team visit residential building sites with a bobcat and truck to collect clean waste from the construction site. Since the Midland Magpies were set up in November 2006, Midland Brick has partnered with builders such as Ross North Homes, In-Vogue Homes, Highbury Homes, APG Homes, Novus Homes, Daly and Shaw, Jade Projects, Rural Building Company, Plunkett Homes, Pindan, Novus Homes, MetroStyle, Webb & Brown Neaves and Domination Homes, and companies such as Challenge Brickpaving. |
