A shortage of building products in Western Australia in 1946 encouraged brothers Ric and Gerry New to produce their own bricks. Locating suitable clays in Middle Swan close to the WA town of Midland, they founded Midland Brick Company and started manufacturing bricks. In 1990 the company became a division of Boral. The company has been acknowledged in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest brickworks in the world. In 2006 Midland Brick opened its newest, most modern kiln, Kiln 11, capable of producing enough bricks to build 2500 homes per year.
