The Hyatt Regency Perth: A Clay Brick Icon That Stands the Test of Time
Perched on the eastern edge of Perth’s CBD, the Hyatt Regency Perth is an architectural landmark and a proud chapter in Midland Brick’s history.
Originally opened as The Merlin Hotel in 1984, this five-star development was the first luxury hotel built on the city’s eastern boundary. Designed by celebrated Australian architect John Andrews and constructed by Multiplex, the building is a striking example of brutalist architecture, known for its bold form and structural expression.
A key feature of the project was its extensive use of Midland Brick clay face bricks, with more than 4 million bricks hand laid across the structure. This ambitious use of clay brick not only shaped the building’s distinctive façade but also showcased the material’s strength, character and timeless appeal.
Although the Hyatt Regency hotel has now closed, the building itself still stands- a lasting reminder of architectural innovation and enduring craftsmanship. We’re proud that Midland Brick played a role in creating a piece of Perth’s built heritage.
