About the Initiative

The Koomalin Clay Artist-in-Residence Program is part of Midland Brick’s Clay & Community Arts Initiative, a program designed to connect artists, students and community through hands-on creative practice.

At its core is Koomalin Clay, developed using clay from the Goomalling region in collaboration with Ballardong Noongar community members. Named after the Noongar word for Goomalling, it reflects a deep connection to Country, culture and storytelling.

Proceeds from Koomalin Clay sales directly fund this residency, supporting regional arts development and youth engagement.

 

The Opportunity

A unique opportunity for a practicing Western Australian clay artist to embed within the Goomalling community and deliver a meaningful, creative program.

Residency Snapshot:

  • Location: Goomalling, WA
  • Duration: 9 weeks
  • Dates: July – September 2026
  • Commitment: Approx. 2 days per week
  • Value: $8,100 (incl. GST)

 

What You’ll Do

  • Work with students across two local schools
  • Deliver hands-on clay workshops
  • Engage with the broader community through a public workshop
  • Participate in a cultural immersion experience
  • Contribute to a growing regional arts initiative

About Koomalin Clay

Koomalin Clay is a unique stoneware blend sourced from the Goomalling region, featuring natural granite inclusions and a rich, expressive  finish. Created by Midland Brick in collaboration with the Ballardong Noongar community and inspired by the Biosphere Boodja Arts and  Wild Things Festival.

Every bag purchased supports a new annual Ceramic Artist-in-Residence Program for local schools in Goomalling in 2026.
