Midland Brick Helps Bring Community Artwork To Life At Moondyne Festival
Preparation, creativity and collaboration came together in the lead-up to this year’s Moondyne Festival, with local students and community groups helping create a large-scale community artwork inspired by the Avon River and the surrounding landscape.
In the weeks before the festival, Midland Brick partnered with Toodyay District High School and Arts Toodyay to begin work on Creating Country Together, a hands-on community installation celebrating connection to Country, culture and creativity. Students painted a representation of the Avon River using colours and imagery inspired by the local environment, helping lay the foundations for what would become a collaborative festival experience.
Held at Duidgee Park during the annual Moondyne Festival, the finished activity invited festivalgoers of all ages to contribute to the evolving installation by adding native plants and animals significant to the region and Noongar culture. Working alongside local organisations including Arts Toodyay, Toodyay District High School and the Noongar Kaartdijin Aboriginal Corporation, participants helped bring the artwork to life throughout the day.
The project highlighted the importance of community connection, storytelling and cultural learning through art, while also providing an opportunity to share knowledge about Aboriginal culture, Noongar language and connection to Country as part of Midland Brick’s ongoing reconciliation journey.
Supporting regional communities and creating meaningful local partnerships remains an important focus for Midland Brick, which has proudly contributed to Western Australian communities for 80 years.
The Moondyne Festival is one of regional Western Australia’s most recognised community events, bringing together history, arts and culture in the heart of Toodyay each year. Through initiatives like Creating Country Together, Midland Brick continues to support opportunities that celebrate creativity, community participation and cultural connection.
